One-hour file ~60 MB ~144 MB
Speech (talks, podcasts) Sounds the same Sounds the same
Music and sound design Small loss in cymbals and reverb tails As close to the source as MP3 gets

Rule of thumb: voices → 128 kbps; music and anything you'll listen to closely → 320 kbps.

Where the sound comes from

YouTube doesn't store a 320 kbps MP3. It streams audio in AAC or Opus at roughly 128–160 kbps. When you convert, our server takes that stream and encodes it to MP3 at the bitrate you choose. A higher MP3 bitrate means less extra loss during that conversion — it can't bring back detail that YouTube's stream never had. If you need audio with no extra compression at all, use YouTube to WAV instead.

FAQ

Is a 320 kbps MP3 from YouTube really 320 kbps quality?

The file is encoded at 320 kbps, but its source is YouTube's own audio stream, which is typically around 128–160 kbps in AAC or Opus. A 320 kbps MP3 preserves that sound as faithfully as MP3 can; it doesn't improve on it.

Why choose 320 instead of 128?

320 kbps keeps more of the original detail in music and complex sound. For speech — lectures, podcasts, audiobooks — 128 kbps sounds the same and the file is less than half the size.

Will the MP3 play in my car?

Yes. MP3 is the most widely supported audio format; car stereos, USB sticks, phones and smart speakers all play it.
